YETI recalls 1.9 million coolers and gear due to life-threatening hazard

Consumer Product Safety Commission

YETI has issued a recall of 1.9 million soft coolers and gear cases due to safety issues caused by product malfunction.

“The magnet-lined closures on these products can fail and release the magnets, posing a risk of serious injury or death if swallowed,” the YETI website states. The company is asking all product owners to stop using them immediately.

Recalled models

The following models manufactured between March 2018 and January 2023 have been recalled:

  • M20 hopper
  • M30 hopper 1.0 and 2.0
  • Dry SideKick

Not sure which one you own? Check the hang tag on the outside of the cooler. SKU numbers can also be found on the website.

Security risks

Ingesting more than one magnet can cause them to gravitate toward each other or another metal object and eventually become lodged in the digestive system.

This can lead to :

  • perforations
  • Torsion and/or blockage of the intestines
  • Infection
  • Blood poisoning
  • Death

Although the Consumer Product Safety Commission said there were no reported ingestions or injuries, it received 1,399 reports of “magnet-lined closures degrading or failing, including reports of magnets missing or detached”.
