‘Shazam’ sequel exceeds expectations

Warner Bros. Pictures and “Shazam!” Fury of the Gods” is on track for a $30 million opening weekend at the domestic box office after $3.4 million in previews on Thursday.

The $125 million budget film is reportedly heading for an $11 million haul on Friday, which includes that preview amount. At the start of the week, the film was expected to debut domestically around $35-40 million. He won’t hit those numbers now.

The first “Shazam” grossed $5.9 million in Thursday previews before opening with $53.5 million for the three-day run in April 2019 and eventually grossing $366 million worldwide. .

The film was a critical miss, the Rotten Tomatoes score falling to just 53% (5.8/10). Audiences are higher on the film but at 84%, which is comparable to the first film.

Despite the criticism, “Shazam” is expected to beat last week’s box office king “Scream VI,” which is expected to drop 62% to around $17 million. “Creed III” is expected to come in third with $15 million, followed by “65” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” vying for fourth and fifth with $5.3 million each.

The film also opens worldwide this weekend with reports suggesting a $50 million overseas haul, though if it went the domestic route it would be considerably lower.
