Paris Hilton gifted her mother Kathy Hilton with a blue Chanel handbag while announcing the arrival of her newborn son Phoenix Barron.
In late January, Paris, 40, announced that she and her husband, businessman Carter Reum, had welcomed a baby boy via surrogate.
The couple kept the birth a secret from their two immediate families until Paris was about to break the news on Instagram.
Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Paris has revealed she gave Kathy a designer handbag and then handed her Phoenix for the first time.
“I was thinking, if I give her Chanel first, maybe she won’t be so upset that I didn’t tell her about it,” Paris confessed to the magazine.
The moment Kathy first met Phoenix was captured on reality TV cameras for the Peacock Paris In Love series.
Paris described the scene: “I was holding the baby on my shoulder with a blanket over him, then I sat down.”
The hotel heiress said Kathy was ‘like, ‘What is this? And I thought, “A baby… here’s your grandson.” She’s like, “Is this yours?” And she starts crying. She said, “Let me hold him. He’s the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen in my life. Oh, he’s so beautiful.” She was just in tears.
She recently explained why her and Carter hid the baby’s birth even from their immediate families until just before she made the announcement on Instagram.
“My whole life has been so public,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I never had anything for me. We decided we wanted to have this whole experience for ourselves.
She said of her son: “I want to protect him and be with him every second. You have this maternal instinct that kicks in, which I never had before.
While the surrogate was in labor, Paris was so determined to protect her privacy that she even bothered to dress up in a brown wig and show up at the hospital under an alias.
Her decision was particularly notable given her closeness to her family, especially her sister Nicky Hilton Rothschild and their mother.
However, tension erupted between mother and daughter in November when Kathy blurted out to E! News that IVF had been a “struggle” for Paris.
“I don’t know where she got that,” Paris replied in an interview with TMZ the next day. “It was never a struggle at all.”
When Paris announced the arrival of her firstborn, all she said was, “You are already loved beyond words,” in a photo of the baby’s hand holding Paris’ finger.
On a recent episode of her This Is Paris podcast, she said Phoenix was “about over a week old” before telling Kathy and Nicky about her birth.
“When I introduced my mom to our little boy, it was amazing to see the look on her face, she was so surprised,” Paris said. “Just the look on his face, it was just priceless.”
