(CNN) Kelly Clarkson says she’s done with marriage, but is ready to find love again and is committed to supporting her children as they adjust to her divorce.
The singer recently opened up about her split from Brandon Blackstock, the father of her two children, and the impact it has had on her family.
“I literally ask my kids every night when we cuddle up, ‘Are you happy? And if you’re not, what could make you happier?'” Clarkson said on ” The Angie Martinez IRL Podcast”. “Sometimes they say, especially the last two years, and it kills me and I want them to be honest, so I never say, ‘Oh my God, don’t tell me that’, but a lot of times it would be like, ‘ You know, I’m just really sad. I wish mom and dad were in the same house.'”
She added, “I bring up that kind of person. I want you to be honest with me.”
Clarkson said growing up in a divorced family herself helped her better understand the feelings involved.
“I’m just sitting there and thinking, ‘I get it. I also come from a divorced family. I get it. That sucks,'” she said. “But we’ll work it out. And you’re so loved by both of us. I think communicating with them and not treating them, not treating them like adults, because they’re not – but not treat like a child. These are not small feelings. These are huge feelings, and these are huge emotions.
Clarkson and Blackstock split in June 2020, with the singer citing irreconcilable differences. She said that although she did not plan to remarry, she wanted to find love.
“I will not marry,” she said. “In my life, I’ve been through a few divorces in my own family when I was a kid. I would love to fall in love. I would love to find someone and fall in love and do this thing, but I have kids and it’s that’s why I say that.”
