NEW DELHI: The Center said on Friday that he was closely monitoring the H3N2 subtype of seasonal flu after an 87-year-old man from Karnataka became India’s first victim of the virus.
THE Union Ministry of Health in a statement, he said he was monitoring the situation in various states/UT through the Integrated Disease surveillance program (IDSP) in real time.
Cases resulting from seasonal flu are expected to decrease from late March, the Center said.
“Young children, the elderly with comorbidities are the most vulnerable groups in the context of seasonal influenza,” he said.
So far, Karnataka and Haryana have each confirmed one death from H3N2 flu.
What is this?
Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses that circulate in all parts of the world, and cases increase in certain months around the world.
India experiences two seasonal flu peaks every year: one from January to March and the other during the post-monsoon season.
Real-time monitoring via a network of laboratories
Near real-time surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases presenting in health facility DPOs and IPDs is undertaken by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP), National Center for Disease Control (NCDC).
According to the latest data, a total of 3,038 laboratory-confirmed cases of various influenza subtypes, including H3N2, have been reported through March 9, 2023 by states.
This includes 1,245 cases in January, 1,307 in February and 486 cases in March (through March 9).
Influenza data from the ICMR laboratory network
In India, Integrated Influenza Disease (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Disease (SARI) surveillance for detection of human influenza virus and SARS-COV-2 virus is ongoing through a structured surveillance network ILI/ SARI of 28 sites.
The surveillance network is made up of 27 virus research and diagnostic laboratories of DHR-ICMR and the country’s National Influenza Center (WHO-NIC) housed at ICMR-National Institute of Virology in Pune, also a WHO Collaborating Center for Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS).
During the first 9-week period (January 2 to March 5) of 2023, the surveillance network monitored human influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection in SARS cases and of SG.

- Surveillance data from December 15 to date reflects the increase in the number of influenza A H3N2 cases.
- About half of all hospitalized severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and outpatient influenza illnesses were infected with influenza A H3N2.
