Man hole cover and frame inspection -avoiding manual handling injuries

We have had a small number of accidents involving people partially falling through man hole covers on our sites.

Does anyone know how we can inspect the covers without lifting them up to avoid manual handling injuries? We have been discussing sounding them out using a hammer.
