Question 751 October 2011

Battery Recycling - compliance

We currently allow staff to bring used batteries into the office for us then to recycle, an arrangement which was established before I joined the company.

I have a doubt about the compliance element of this with regards the company. My concern is over the “collection” of household waste and therefore the disposal/ recycling of batteries that the company did not produce. Since we do not retail batteries, we are not required to offer a take-back system.

Can anyone clarify if we need a waste management licence or exemption for this?
