Question 698 June 2010

Drugs and Alcohol: Cocodamol and Canabis; approach to positive screening.

Our current drug and alcohol policy is a two stage drug test process with initial screening provided by a urine dip stick and any positive test then sent off for full analysis. Our current response to any positive test is to suspend pending the full results however we are considering a change to our policy as all of the dip stick positives for Cocodamol have been related to prescription medication.

We are looking at the possibility of not suspending based on both the manager judgement of colleague behaviour and appearance and a colleague questionnaire about prescription / over the counter Medication.

Have any member companies followed a similar approach ?

We would also be interested in the approach to Cannabis - do members always dismiss in the event of a positive test or do they have different approaches based on the individual circumstances.
