Question 581 September 2007

Hands-free phone use when driving - effect of increased penalty?

The increased penalty for hand-held phone use in vehicles (from a fixed- fine to licence penalty points) may have led to pressure on some companies to install hands-free equipment in company cars.

However, well-publicised research has increasingly suggested that the use of ANY form of telephony in cars can be a dangerous distraction that will increase road risk. Taking these two issues together, have organisations changed their in-car mobile phone policies since Sheiiba last reviewed this issue in January 2006 and if so how?
