Question 63 May 2001

Cannabis testing & sanctions

Has any company that operates a drug & alcohol policy faced the following
situation:

During a random test an employee is found to have traces of cannabis in his
blood. He claims that the drug was consumed several days earlier during the
weekend. Since traces of cannabis can be detected in the blood some weeks
after smoking, we are unable to verify his claim.

Has any company faced this dilemma before?

What level of sanction does your company impose on finding a positive test
result due to cannabis?
