Question 489 September 2006

Managing hot works in managed AND remote unmanaged locations

Corporate Benchmarking N.B.This question was initially posted without referance to 'Remote Locations' and a number of good responses were received which lost their relevance in the context of remote operations. However, as Managing Hot Works on site may be of interest to other members we have included those responses below.

I am currently reviewing our procedures for managing hot works in remote locations where there are no competent people to issue permits. I am looking to obtain information on how other organisations manage this issue.

I would be grateful if you could answer some of the question below and possibly forward on you policy and views on this subject

1. Are all hot works classed as High Risk
2. Do you request a task specific SSOW for all hot works
3. Do you issue a Permit to Work
4. Does the contractor issue a permit to work
5. Do you allow the contractor to decide if the hot work is high risk
6. Are you notified of all hot works that take place
