Data retention for insurance purposes

We have been advised that for long term potential insurance claims e.g. noise, WRULD etc we should retain records for 40 years. Whilst some data will be covered by data protection for which we have procedures, how do members address storage with respect to format etc, given space issues and the fact that CD's are said to decay over time.
