Assault, Trespass and Duty of Care

We recently had an ex-employee enter our premises and assault an employee. The Police did not get involved as the employee would not press charges. Clearly there is an issue with the law of trespass and also the question of owing a "duty of care" to our employees. Has any member had a similar issue and if so how was it resolved and how might it be prevented in the future?
