Question 843 April 2015

Size and scope of HSW service

As well as benchmarking organisational performance, periodically we like to check where we are as a service provider to our organisation. An obvious question to consider is size and scope of service. It would be helpful to know from members:

• The size of your organisation, both by head count and by FTE.

• The number of HSW practitioners per employee, preferably by headcount but by FTE if that’s the figure you use.

• Please include within your count any admin and other specialist staff who are part of your HSW service/function, but not TU/employee reps or ‘embedded’ coordinators i.e. where its an additional task to their core job role. For example, who would your payroll or HR team consider to be in a Health, Safety and Wellbeing role, or who would obviously be by nature of job title/description or reporting line?

• Happy to receive qualitative descriptions about who you’ve left in or out and descriptions of your service scope. For example: We are a health and safety and wellbeing service, e.g. we manage health-related contracts (OH, counselling, etc.), but we have no internal OH specialists. All people in the service are essentially ‘full time’ on HSW activities. IEM, FM, etc, all dealt with by separate teams, albeit all these services eventually report to the same director.

• Size of budget your Health, Safety and Wellbeing service directly controls and what non-staffing costs need to come out of that. For example we have a central budget for eyecare, counselling, OH and fast-access physio contract costs.

If you are able to respond we are happy to ‘show you more of ours, before you show us yours’.
